What is A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 for French?

A1 to C2 are levels of French proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):

A1: Beginner – Can understand and use basic phrases.
A2: Elementary – Can communicate in simple tasks.
B1: Intermediate – Can deal with everyday situations and describe experiences.
B2: Upper Intermediate – Can interact with fluency on a wide range of topics.

How long does it take to learn French at each level?

How do I know which French level to enrol in?
